Filling Your Five Buckets In The Right Order
The concept of “filling your five buckets” is a metaphor for personal growth and development. It suggests that there are five key areas of life that we should focus on to achieve our full potential.
I’ve read about this concept in books such as Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill, Principles by Ray Dalio and more recently in The Diary Of a CEO by Steven Bartlett.
Working as a mechanical design engineer, I got to meet many engineers from around the world. Recently, the transition to a net-zero has created a lot of demand for this job, and I see some engineers jumping from junior roles straight to seniors with only two or three years of working experience. This happens because the labour market is tight and companies are desperate to attract the skills they need. I think employees who are doing this are making a big mistake. You get to learn a lot of valuable knowledge as a junior that you don’t get to learn as a senior any more. By accepting a senior role too soon, you are effectively trading your future knowledge for a short-term payslip and status boost.
However, similar to investing, if you avoid the shortcut trading temptation by filling your five buckets in the right order, then the chances to unleash your full potential and succeed in accomplishing your long-term goals are greater.
